34 Derb l'Hotel, Bab Doukala, Marrakech medina

Riad Kniza stands apart in Marrakech for choosing continuity over reinvention. The 18th-century house was restored by Haj Mohamed Bouskri with traditional materials and specialist Moroccan artisans, then furnished with the eye of a noted antiques dealer. Across 19 rooms and suites, carved cedar, zellige, tadelakt, painted ceilings, textiles and fireplaces create a richly layered but genuinely domestic atmosphere. The experience is deliberately intimate: the Moroccan restaurant has only nine tables and asks for dinner orders a day ahead so ingredients can be bought fresh that morning; meals can be served in ornate salons or beneath the night sky on the roof terrace. A tranquil pool courtyard and hammam-spa provide respite after the souks. Near Bab Doukala, the riad also bridges old and new Marrakech particularly well, with the medina's monuments in walking reach and Guéliz a short distance away.
